My daughter is completing the Masters program at South Gwinnett this year - our first year. She is in second grade this year.
She LOVES it! I have been very impressed.
This year they studied the baroque time period. First semester, they studied early America - the art (which included making their own corn husk dolls, making their own marbles and sewing a pouch to keep them in, potholder, among others), the music (they wrote their own hymn as a group to perform, learned pieces from the time period, as well as reading music), drama (games on public speaking, stage terms, ending with a play about the Native Americans).
Second semester, they have been studying the Europeans during the Baroque time period. Mikaela (my daughter) has loved the painting in art - focusing on landscapes and self portraits. They also designed their own frames to display the art during the upcoming show. In music they studied various composers from the time period - Bach, Handel, *Scarlotti (which I just had to Google!), **Paco Bell (which my daughter just told me is spelled like Taco Bell with a "P").
In drama, they studied Cyrano de Bergeac and other plays from the time period. They will complete the semester with a presentation of the play on Tuesday, March 30th at 7:00 at the South Gwinnett location. You are very welcome to come and see!
Second semester they also studied the dance from the time period and have been learning a few dances. In history, she enjoys the creative presentations - never dry lectures, always engaging lessons. Mikaela has enjoyed playing a pictionary type game to review key vocabulary terms.
The teachers, and especially the director (Dana) have been fabulous! Mikaela was a little nervous about going at the beginning of the year and again after Christmas. They were loving and kind toward her - always welcome her with a big smile, and a personal greeting. Those things mean a lot to nervous mommas:).
I originally registered her thinking it would be an extra curricular type activity for her. It really is very educational and serves as our school time on Tuesdays. We do reading/math in the morning before going. I am amazed at how much she retains - as well as how much is presented to her.
My children will be in 1st grade and 3rd grade in the fall and I have them both signed up!
